First pilot project launched: New corrosion protection film from RENOLIT and WP in practical test
Worms, September 15th, 2020 – The first pilot project of the two companies RENOLIT and WP Energy has started at a wind farm near to the German city of Cologne. In the beginning of September, work began on two wind turbines built by a well-known manufacturer. About 33 square meters of the new RENOLIT CP corrosion protection film for onshore wind turbines were applied to the towers of each of the two turbines.
The film is the first product of a new portfolio which RENOLIT has developed and is now being marketed in cooperation with WP Energy (a part of the WP Group).
“We are pleased that we have now introduced the film on the market” said Ralph Gut, General Manager at RENOLIT. “We are proud of the product we have developed and pleased that the pilot project has started. Corrosion is a big problem in the wind energy industry. The RENOLIT CP film, which is certified according to ISO 12944-9 CX, offers long-term corrosion protection of up to 10 years and thus makes an important contribution to economics in the wind energy sector.”
“We expect less long-term maintenance and repairs from the robust film” added Ralph Lorenz, Department Manager Project Management at WP Energy. “The wind turbines are thus subject to fewer interruptions while at the same time, being better protected against corrosion.”
Both wind turbines with corrosion protection film will be regularly inspected and directly compared to turbines which were not applied with film. “This will allow us to exactly determine the performance of the RENOLIT CP” said Lorenz.
The corrosion protection films were developed with one objective in mind: To reduce maintenance time and costs and to avoid down-time. According to Lorenz, “The film eliminates the drying times associated with applying corrosion protection paint coatings”. “Furthermore, applying the film is less weather dependent than paint and the film application can be more flexibly planned”.
