Calendered Film Production

The manufacturing

Calendered vinyl gets its name from the large steel rolls - the calender rolls - which are part of the manufacturing process. On the calender line the raw materials are mixed together according to the special formulation, extruded and then flattened out to 2.4 to 10 mil thin film by various heated calender rolls. RENOLIT has worldwide over 50 state of the art calender lines and more than 60 years of experience in producing calendered films. This makes us to a worldwide recognized manufacturing expert in calendered vinyl.

Monomer or polymer?

The type of plasticizer used defines the performance of calendered film. Monomeric calendered vinyl uses low or mono weight plasticizers, and the final film is perfect for low-cost indoor or short-term outdoor applications. Polymeric films are comprised of more complex, higher-molecular-weight plasticizers, which leads to a higher viscosity and better stability. Thus, polymeric calendered films have good dimensional stability, flexibility and durability. This polymeric quality combined with production improvements have boosted the performance of calendered vinyl. Even though calendered film is not made the same way as cast, it now has nearly the same performance.
