A breakthrough that can change the world: Bio-attributed PVC made from renewable raw materials. They are a key to more climate and environmental protection. At RENOLIT, we are proud to bring a whole new generation of these sustainable plastics to the market - with ISCC certification.

Plastics have so far been both a blessing and a curse

The past decades can justifiably be called the age of plastics. Plastics have fundamentally improved our lives in all areas - and at the same time are now suspected of threatening the climate and nature of our planet. They seem to be both a curse and a blessing. But plastics are indispensable in many areas. That is why they must become more sustainable: More climate-friendly and environmentally friendly at the same time. At RENOLIT, we are not only committed to the goal of a true circular economy, but also to the development of sustainable plastics.

Renewable raw materials: how plastics become sustainable

Renewable raw materials are the key to more sustainability. Up to now, plastics have been produced from fossil raw materials - i.e. mainly from petroleum. Creating alternatives here has been a major challenge so far. The breakthrough has now been achieved with so-called bio-attributed PVC, whose polymer matrix can be produced 100 per cent from plant-based raw materials.

How our bio-attributed PVC works

Our bio-attributed PVC uses plant-based raw materials to replace petroleum. This can now be integrated into existing supply chains and production processes. Even a combination with PVC made from conventional raw materials is possible. This is how we ensure that bio-based PVC can be integrated into plastic production as easily and quickly as possible. We call this new product "RENOLIT bio@". It has the same properties and application possibilities as conventional PVC, which means that the positive product properties are also retained.

Our raw material: Vegetable tall oil

So-called tall oil is used as a renewable raw material. Tall is the Swedish name for pine. The oil is therefore purely vegetable and is mainly obtained from the wood of coniferous trees. It is a pure by-product of the pulp industry. The oil is produced from the extractives of the wood that are released when the pulp is boiled. This means that no additional trees have to be felled for this raw material and it does not compete with food production.

RENOLIT bio@: Certified sustainable!

We are proud to announce that we have now also received a sustainability certificate for our bio-attributed PVC products. Our Spanish plant "[RENOLIT] Hispania", a major pioneer in the group, has received ISCC plus certification (ISCC-PLUS-Cert-ES226-20230004). This means: We can guarantee the traceability of sustainable raw materials in the entire supply chain of [RENOLIT] bio@. This is a first and shows how important the path to a sustainable future is to us at [RENOLIT].

Greenhouse gas savings of up to 90 percent!

I would like to highlight one figure because it makes the breakthrough of [RENOLIT] bio@ particularly clear: in the manufacture of films in this product line, we use bio-based PVC raw materials that save up to 90 percent greenhouse gases compared to conventional PVC. A great contribution to climate protection!

Sustainable PVC is just the beginning

RENOLIT bio@ is just the beginning. In addition to PVC as a raw material, we will also gradually introduce sustainable alternatives for other raw materials. In this way, we can continue to use the advantages and reliability of plastics in the future and take responsibility for the environment and the company.

A milestone for the world - and for RENOLIT

I am very proud of the RENOLIT team that made this breakthrough possible. Yes, you can confidently say: this is a milestone for the whole world. Because we are making a contribution here to solving one of the big questions of the future: How do we make plastics sustainable? But it is also a milestone for our company RENOLIT. Because bio@ shows our innovative strength and will make us even more competitive and stronger in the future.
