CAMP DEL FERRO, HERE'S HOW A SPORTS CENTER CREATES A DIALOGUE WITH THE PAST AND LEADS IT TOWARDS THE FUTURE

The new sports facility in Barcelona is an example of sustainable architecture perfectly integrating with the territory. The roof made with RENOLIT ALKORPLAN F Terracotta.

Sant Celoni, Barcelona, 28 06 2021 - It has nearly zero emissions, retraces the memory of places, and is set to the future for its attention to sustainability, the ability to integrate into the neighborhood it is in, and for being conceived as an open space as well. It is Camp del Ferro, the new and beautiful sports center located at via Pare Manyanet, in the Sagrera district, Barcelona. Recently completed, the sports complex houses three playing fields over an area of more than 7,000 square meters. Winner of the 2015 competition run by Barcelona d'Infraestructures Municipals, SA (BIMSA) - the city development company - was the temporary team formed by architects Albert Salazar Junyent and Joan Carles Navarro (partner of AIA), Antoni Barceló and Bàrbara Balanzó (members of the Catalan studio Barceló-Balanzó arquitectes) and the architect Gustau Gili Galfetti. The team developed a project to minimize the volumetric impact and bring emissions and energy consumption to near zero.

«Our original idea was that the building should not only be sustainable but should go much further - explains Albert Salazar: we did it, to the point that the structure obtained the LEED Gold certification eventually». RENOLIT ALKORPLAN F in the terracotta version also contributed to obtaining this important result, whose mechanical fixing system is particularly suitable for corrugated sheet supports in large industrial plants, warehouses, logistics, or sports centers.

Quick and easy to apply, regardless of the climatic conditions, RENOLIT ALKORPLAN F provides a perfect and durable waterproofing of the roof. To reduce the volumetric impact, the designers took advantage of the possibility of burying part of the structure, placing two sports fields on the lower floors. The third took the upper floor, while the coverage of the second field also became an elevated access yard compared to the road level. As regards the structure, a combination of exposed bricks in different grids and multiple colors was used: «A deliberate choice - underlines Gustau Gili Galfetti -. First of all, it was a way to contextualize the building in the place where it is located: Sant Andreu and the Sagrera have in fact an important past of factory architecture, with the widespread use of brick. Camp del Ferro creates a dialogue with this context. But such different bricks, of different colors and different textures help to 'pixelate' the facade, to make it more dynamic, vibrant, full of light».

The roof responds to the same design logic: supported by exposed metal trusses of 35-meter span and completed by an inverted vaulted roof, with gentle points upwards, it integrates into the context and reflects the trend of the roofs of the neighboring warehouses. «On the roof, we also have 50kw of photovoltaic energy - recalls Albert Salazar -, which means that in most summer days it will have positive energy to supply to nearby public buildings». However, the entire building is attentive to sustainability and reducing consumption. The energy efficiency of the building in fact begins with the volumetric approach of the project. The decision to partially bury it, as well as for reasons of visual impact, has contributed to improving its thermal inertia and increasing the energy gain. Likewise, solar protection, cross ventilation, natural lighting, or the use of renewable energies reduce the energy demand for its operation. The LEED Gold certificate is the recognition of a very high-quality project and RENOLIT ALKORPLAN roofing products is proud to have contributed to this result.
