Preserving history: RENOLIT ALKORPLAN roofing products partner in the iconic Ubarmin Clinic roof refurbishment in Pamplona

Saint-Celoni, XX de abril de 2025 – Foi com o maior dos orgulhos que os produtos para coberturas RENOLIT ALKORPLAN, líder em soluções inovadoras de impermeabilização do revestimento, participaram na renovação da cobertura da icónica Clínica Ubarmin em Pamplona, um testemunho da arquitetura do século XX de Navarra.

Apesar do seu estatuto de celebridade, a Clínica Ubarmin enfrentou numerosos desafios ao longo dos anos, nomeadamente no que diz respeito ao seu sistema de cobertura. Foram vários os problemas que levaram à necessidade de uma revisão global, desde fugas e danos estruturais a ineficiências energéticas. Em resposta, o Governo de Navarra iniciou um ambicioso projeto de renovação destinado a melhorar a eficiência energética e o conforto interior do edifício, preservando meticulosamente a sua essência arquitetónica.

O projeto de renovação – promovido pelo SNS-O (Servicio Navarro de Salud – Osasunbidea) e financiado com fundos europeus – foi projetado pela OFS Architects e executado pela Jacar Montajes, que coopera com a RENOLIT ALKORPLAN há 40 anos. Através de soluções inovadoras e de um compromisso com a sustentabilidade, os produtos para coberturas RENOLIT ALKORPLAN contribuíram para enfrentar os complexos desafios apresentados pela cobertura da clínica. 

A maravilha arquitetónica e os desafios da cobertura da Clínica Ubarmin

Construído entre 1968 e 1974, o edifício da Clínica Ubarmin é um exemplo notável da arquitetura navarra do século XX. Projetada por Fernando Redón Huici, a sua singularidade e importância arquitetónicas foram reconhecidas pela sua inclusão, no outono de 2019, no catálogo DOCOMOMO, uma organização dedicada à documentação de edifícios do Movimento Moderno a nível internacional. 

Além disso, a Direção Geral da Cultura – Instituição Príncipe de Viana também reconheceu o seu valor, inscrevendo-o no seu inventário. Embora não constitua uma proteção jurídica, sublinha o esforço de valorização e de salvaguarda da sua integridade arquitetónica. 

Originalmente concebida como um centro de tratamento de traumatismos e de cuidados, o design da clínica apresenta uma separação nítida entre as suas duas partes principais: a torre e o corpo inferior, sendo este último concebido para parecer leve e translúcido, coberto por um “mar” de cúpulas que lhe conferem uma qualidade etérea.

No entanto, a cobertura da Clínica Ubarmin tem enfrentado numerosos problemas ao longo dos anos, sofrendo de fugas devido a cúpulas e bases partidas, drenos desligados e problemas com a cobertura em PVC, entre outros problemas estruturais. 

Estes problemas são agravados pelo excesso de luz solar que penetra no interior, o que, juntamente com a falta de isolamento e o estado de envelhecimento das cúpulas, leva a uma perda significativa de energia.

Das 1,452 cúpulas clarabóias que compõem a cobertura, 472 foram projetadas para deixar entrar a luz, mas desde a inauguração do edifício, muitas clarabóias foram fechadas devido aos seus efeitos adversos sobre as atividades no subsolo, como o calor excessivo e o encandeamento. Estes desafios sublinham a necessidade de uma manutenção cuidadosa e de uma eventual remodelação para preservar o significado arquitetónico do edifício, assegurando simultaneamente a sua funcionalidade.

Por conseguinte, o Governo de Navarra, proprietário da clínica, decidiu levar a cabo um grande projeto de renovação para melhorar a eficiência energética do edifício, bem como o conforto interior do mesmo, tanto térmico como luminoso, corrigindo as deficiências da cobertura existente, respeitando, tanto quanto possível, o carácter e o valor arquitetónico do edifício.

Revolucionar a renovação da cobertura: uma abordagem abrangente para atualizar as clarabóias da Clínica Ubarmin

 

With the help of its partner, Jacar Montajes successfully implemented a two-pronged strategy for the renovation of the skylights. 

The project involved the refurbishment of a 9,100 square metre rooftop, which housed 1,452 dome units each measuring 2.00x2.00 metres. Out of these, 404 domes were left open to allow light to pass through, while the remaining domes were sealed off, with the structures left in place on an aluminium frame to maintain their original appearance.

After the domes were removed and taken to a controlled landfill, the renovation process began with the installation of a polyester plinth mechanically fixed to the concrete structure in some areas, including an incorporated bivalve dome. In other areas, a ribbed metal sheet was fixed to the concrete structure. A vapour barrier sheet was then laid down, followed by a 50 mm thick rock wool panel for insulation.

Additional layers included a double layer of insulation, creating slopes with thicknesses ranging from 60 to 100 mm, and a final 30 mm thick layer of PIR insulation, all mechanically fixed to the previously placed metal support.

Metal frames were set up on special pieces arranged in 2.00x2.00 m grids, onto which a PVC RENOLIT ALKORPLAN F Classic waterproofing membrane was applied, secured with stainless steel fasteners of various lengths to match the previously created slopes. Around 400 PVC drains were integrated into the existing 63 mm diameter downpipes to ensure proper drainage.

The project was completed with the installation of 1,048 monovalve skylight dome units, which were screwed onto the aluminium frame, finalising the renovation and ensuring both the functionality and aesthetic appeal of the rooftop were preserved and enhanced.

“The project was a success and the owners were really happy about the result, especially because there were additional challenges, such as the need to finish the refurbishment quickly and on time, so as not to disrupt too much the activity of the centre, which has always remained open during the works. The flexibility and ease of installation of RENOLIT ALKORPLAN membrane made it relatively easy to execute. Furthermore, we needed a membrane that would guarantee longevity, for the sustainability of the centre”, explains Javer Carmona, Managing Director of Jacar Montajes.

The successful completion of this intricate endeavour, achieved within a tight schedule and without disrupting the clinic's operations, highlights the expertise, commitment, and collaborative spirit of all parties involved.
