RENOLIT enters the photovoltaic module industry

German technical film expert RENOLIT is introducing RENOLIT REFLEXOLAR, a totally new class of backsheets in the Solar PV arena. The backsheet is an engineered, highly white reflective, flexible Polyolefin-Polyamide multilayer construction. It has a synergetic dynamic barrier system, managing low moisture and oxygen concentrations inside the module but allowing the acetic acid to escape, hence offering extended durability to the module. The product is especially designed to match with the current and future crystalline silicon cell PV module manufacturing industry.

With RENOLIT REFLEXOLAR, RENOLIT further engages in the strongly developing renewable energy industry. RENOLIT has combined its long standing experience in polyolefin based roof membranes and films for outdoor building applications with a strong innovation tradition, operational excellence and a global footprint to design and now rolls out a new patented high performance one-step coextrusion multilayer backsheet. The first generation will be presented during the upcoming INTERSOLAR Europe 2015 exhibition in June.

“By the introduction of RENOLIT REFLEXOLAR, we are determined to contribute to the irreversible trend of making PV modules more efficient and affordable to the world” says Pierre Winant, Member of the Board of the RENOLIT SE.

“My vision was to develop a backsheet platform that performs equally or better than benchmark high performance Fluor-PET based laminates, yet using less expensive processes and polymers. Our backsheet can endure more than 12.000 hours of ‘2SUN weathering’, equivalent to 20 years of Florida conditions. On top extended ‘damp-heat’ studies show that RENOLIT REFLEXOLAR exceeds 3000 hours of accelerated aging with less than 5% of power loss. These results exceeded my expectations” says inventor and Project Manager François Rummens.

RENOLIT REFLEXOLAR is currently being tested by various customers. Samples are available in the form of rolls with widths of up to 1200 mm. A production capacity of 500 MWp equivalent is installed. A further scale up to ~ 3 GWp capacity is scheduled by 2017.
