New Illuminated Ceiling in the AIT-ArchitekturSalon from RENOLIT

Worms, 6. February 2013 – The AIT-ArchitekturSalon in Cologne is a favourite venue for architects and designers, not least because of the numerous exhibitions and interesting events held throughout the year. While the upper floors hosts different exhibitions, the basement is home to exhibition modules from various manufacturers and a well-frequented bar. An ideal place to exchange views and to assimilate impressions. Together with students from the PBSA-FHD (Peter Behrens School of Architecture), RENOLIT has given this place a new, spectacular stretch ceiling.

Max Grütering and Norman Kampf designed the structure which carries the title “TRIBAR”. With this concept, the two young architects won the “Material + Experiment” competition. Conducted by Prof. Dierk van den Hövel last autumn, this students’ competition was organized by RENOLIT and the PBSA-FHD. The objective: The rejuvenation of the AIT-ArchitekturSalons bar using PVC films. The existing area in the AIT-ArchitekturSalon should be transformed into a communicative area without compromising the original function of the room as an exhibition and presentation area.

Apart from Prof. Dierk van Hövel, the jury included Prof. Jörg Leeser (also PBSA-FHD), the AIT-Salon curator Kristina Bacht and Monika Fecht from RENOLIT’s Corporate Design Management. The motivation for the participants of the competition was not just the prize money but also the prospect of constructing the winning design in situ. As planned, the design from Max Grütering and Norman Kamp was realized by the students and installed in the AIT-ArchitekturSalon in Cologne at the end of December last year in time for the imm cologne and the “Passagen” events.

Max Grütering’s and Norman Kamp’s design transformed the ceiling of the bar into a spectacular landscape of polygons. By the use of white, translucent film, the structure is restrained enough not to compete with the exhibited works. The second prize went to Larissa Karduck, Juliane Boddenberg and Susanne Schröder. They intertwined rows of white RENOLIT stretch ceiling films into a wave-like structure which feathered out behind the bar. The alignment of the film strips is variable and permits alternating wave motions by pulling at certain points. The third prize went to Maha Diab, Liang Yueran and Isabel Althaus. They developed a honeycomb-like pattern from stretch ceiling films which abstractly symbolize the visitors to the exhibition.

The special prize for exterior areas went to Santana Schütte and Christina Nießen who transferred the logos of the AIT-ArchitekturSalons in Cologne, Stuttgart, Munich and Hamburg onto mobile walls. The special prize for Material went to Marina Vasilovski and Darja Zimmermann who weaved narrow film strips into a film carpet which should produce a pleasantly diffused light.

The designs submitted for the “Material + Experiment” competition have once again shown how versatile RENOLIT stretch ceiling films are. They are both a simple and attractive medium to create stylish living and working areas in entrance halls, meeting rooms and sales premises. They are also used as attractive elements in the design of exhibition and show stands. A broad spectrum of matt and high-gloss plain colours as well as attractive metallic shades are available. Translucent versions offer additional light effects. In addition, RENOLIT stretch ceiling films have an absolutely first-class surface quality. Their layflat generates a perfectly smooth appearance while their quality and consistency make them the perfect choice for large ceilings. High-gloss surfaces offer a perfect mirror finish.

The clip system of fitting enables rapid assembly and removal if some repair work needs to be carried out behind the film. At the same time, the high ignition temperature of PVC and special flame retarders in the formulation give RENOLIT stretch ceiling films excellent fire-inhibition properties. According to DIN 4102-1, RENOLIT stretch ceiling films are classified as B1 fire resistant and as b-s2-d0 according to the stretch ceiling film standard DIN EN 14716. As a result, the film has a low flammability, develops little smoke in case of fire and thanks to its formulation, hinders the dripping or dropping of burning material.

Apart from their behaviour in case of fire, special emphasis is placed on the non-toxicity of materials which are designed for indoor use. RENOLIT stretch ceiling films are certified in the VOC emission category A+ and thus achieve the best possible French classification for the emission behaviour of building materials designed for indoor use. Stretch ceiling films can also improve the thermal insulation of rooms and thus contribute to lowering heating costs. And if ultimately RENOLIT stretch ceiling films have to be disposed of, they can be easily recycled.
