It all starts with the search for the appropriate initial basis for the pattern, which our design specialists select with the greatest care

Templates include natural wood, stone surfaces and fantasy patterns.

DEVELOPMENT OF THE PATTERN

Many different characteristics go into making a good pattern. It must be harmonious and not resemble a photo. It must also be implementable technically, because the most beautiful motif in the world is useless if it cannot be brought to life in perfect printing detail on our large production machines.

Therefore, one must also bear in mind that such a pattern always contains several colour combinations.

The characteristics that determine a good pattern are not sufficient on their own for the development of a new pattern – the requirements to be fulfilled must also be considered.

• Suitable initial bases (natural wood, fantasy patterns, stone surfaces) that can be processed well with the subsequent assimilation process

• Lots of research

• Selecting a large range of variations

• Keeping your eyes open when out and about

If the characteristics and requirements are fulfilled, then the following is decisive for the pattern development. The templates are processed with oils, chemicals and technical processes such as sand blasting in such a way that they take on a beautiful, natural surface structure.

If a pattern is not prepared properly at the beginning of the process, this will make itself felt through the entire development and production process. A good final product is only possible with a good initial basis.

DEVELOPMENT PROCESS FROM WOOD TO THE READY-FOR-PRINTING PATTERN

After having found a suitable pattern, a high-end camera system is used to digitalise it so that not a single detail is lost. This is followed by the image editing. In order to standardise the process, calibrated monitors are used.

The individual photos are touched up and connected together to form one unending image that exactly corresponds to the dimensions of the printing cylinder. The pattern must also produce a harmonious image across the circumference of the cylinder.

After this, it goes on to separation. During separation, the colours for printing are separated from the colour information from the cameras. The printing machines typically operate using three or four colours.

The first colour is usually a base colour. The second colour is used to model the structures and the third colour brings out the details of the wood structure, such as pores. A fourth colour is often used on top of this, in order to accent certain features. With embossing cylinders, it is also possible to model the feel of the patterned surface in such a way that a natural wood feel is achieved.
