The developing of the surface design
A good surface design has to have a harmonising effect, and shouldn’t look like a photo. It must also be well implemented in a technical sense, because the most beautiful motif is useless if it can’t be perfectly realised using the printing techniques of the large production machines.
That's why you always have to keep in mind that a decor has several colourways.
Not only the characteristics, which mark a goo decor, are enough for the development of a new decor, but also the requirements that have to be achieved.
- Suitable originals (Real wood, creative finishes, stone surfaces), with which you can easily work with in the subsequent shooting process
- a lot of research
- a wide variety of options
- go through your surrounding environment with your eyes open
The following is essential for the development of a decor if the characteristics as well as the requirements are achieved. The patterns can be processed using oils, chemicals or industrial processes such as sandblasting so that you get a beautiful, natural surface structure.
If something hasn‘t had the right finish, from the beginning it runs like a red thread through the entire development and production process. A good end product can only be obtained with a good original.
The development process from wood to print-ready surface design
When a suitable surface pattern is found, it is digitised using a high end camera system, so that none of the details are lost. This is followed by image processing. In order to standardise the process, we work here with calibrated monitors.
The individual photos are retouched, and joined together to form one endless image, i a way that exactly matches the circumference of the printing cylinder. In doing this, we also have to ensure that the pattern creates a harmonious picture across the entire width of the cylinder.
Then, you have the most important task, the separation. The colours for printing are separated using the colour information in the camera. In the printing machines, there are generally 3 or 4 colours you can use.
Colour one is usually a surface-covering colour. The structures are modelled with colour two, and colour three brings out the intricacies of the wood’s structure, such as the pores. Often another colour is then put on top of this, to bring out highlights. Using the embossing cylinders, we can also create the feel of the pattern, so that the natural appearance of wood is achieved.
