A process mechanic for plastics technology is the skilled worker in the plastics-processing industry. He examines raw materials and the way they are prepared. He sets up machines for production and monitors them through to a quality check. He is familiar with the properties of plastics and is briefed on the modern machines, most of which are computer-controlled. The job is a demanding one for people with a love of engineering. The job of a process mechanic involves shift work (after training). This is necessary to ensure that the expensive production machines can be utilised to the maximum capacity possible and that quality levels are maintained. Shift work offers benefits in terms of flexible leisure time. What is more, workers are rewarded financially for shift work. The vocational college which is responsible is located at the Georg-Kerschensteiner job training centre in Ludwigshafen.
